Choosing the Right Mental Health Support During Pregnancy & Parenthood
Becoming a parent is a huge life transition, and it’s completely normal to seek emotional and mental health support during this time. However, with different types of health professionals available it can be hard to know where to start.
Here’s a simple breakdown to help you decide which Wonderbump clinician will be right for you:
Psychologist
A psychologist is trained to help with a wide range of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, as well as the adjustment to parenthood.
Psychologists:
✔ Provide therapy for diagnosed mental health conditions
✔ Use evidence-based treatments, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schema Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
✔ Provide psychological assessment and screening for mental health conditions
✔ Prepare psychological reports
💡Psychology sessions are covered under the Medicare Better Access Scheme when there is a current GP referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan in place.
A psychologist might be the best fit if you’re experiencing persistent anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, or other significant mental health challenges affecting your well-being as a parent.
Counsellor
A counsellor provides emotional support and guidance and improves mental well-being.
Counselling is helpful for:
✔ General stress, overwhelm, and the emotional adjustment to parenthood
✔ Relationship challenges with your partner or family members
✔ Birth debriefing—processing your birth experience in a safe and supportive space
✔ Building confidence as a parent and navigating the changes and challenges of parenthood
💡 Counselling is not covered by Medicare. You do not need a GP referral or Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) to see a counsellor.
A counsellor might be a good fit if you’re looking for a safe, supportive space to talk through your feelings, explore personal growth, and improve your wellbeing.
