Choosing the Right Mental Health Support During Pregnancy & Parenthood

Becoming a parent is a huge life transition, and it’s completely normal to seek emotional and mental health support during this time. But with different types of professionals available – psychologists, mental health social workers, and counsellors – it can be hard to know where to start.

Here’s a simple breakdown to help you decide which might be right for you:

Psychologist

A psychologist is trained to help with a wide range of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, birth trauma, perinatal grief and loss, and adjustment to parenthood.

✔ Can provide therapy for diagnosed mental health conditions
✔ Uses evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schema Therapy and trauma-informed approaches such as EMDR
✔ May provide psychological assessments and screening
✔ Eligible for Medicare rebates with a referral from your GP under a Mental Health Treatment Plan

A psychologist might be the best fit if you’re experiencing persistent anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, or other significant mental health challenges affecting your well-being as a parent.

Mental Health Social Worker

A mental health social worker also provides counselling and therapy, but with an added focus on the social and practical factors impacting your mental health.

✔ Provides therapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress
✔ Helps with practical challenges like finding community support, financial assistance, or family services
✔ Uses a strengths-based, holistic approach to support your mental health
✔ Eligible for Medicare rebates with a GP referral under a Mental Health Treatment Plan

A mental health social worker could be a great choice if you need both emotional support and practical guidance to navigate life’s challenges during pregnancy and early parenthood.

Counsellor

A counsellor provides emotional support and guidance but does not diagnose mental health conditions. Counselling is often helpful for:
✔ General stress, overwhelm, and emotional adjustment to parenthood
✔ Relationship challenges with your partner or family members
✔ Birth debriefing—processing your birth experience in a safe and supportive space
✔ Parenting confidence and identity changes

💡 Unlike psychologists and mental health social workers, counselling is not covered by Medicare.

A counsellor might be a good fit if you’re looking for a safe, supportive space to talk through your feelings, explore personal growth, or strengthen your relationships.
